COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS

Here is a great opportunity to earn a credit in the College of Business and Economics and to help you reach goals in other areas.  BYU alumni and friends are invited to a free webinar Dec. 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. (MST) featuring acclaimed business strategy expert and bestselling author Joseph Grenny. Grenny will discuss how a new approach to personal success can help individuals overcome years of failed change efforts to achieve long-anticipated goals such as getting a promotion, losing weight, increasing sales, overcoming an addiction and more.

Grenny, co-founder of VitalSmarts and three-time New York Times bestselling author, will discuss the research he and his coauthors conducted while writing their upcoming book, Change Anything: The New Science of Personal Success, scheduled for release April 2011. Grenny and his coauthors combined 50 years of the best social science research with their personal study of 5,000 people attempting to overcome intrepid personal challenges such as getting out of debt, losing weight, revamping a sluggish career or saving a struggling relationship. They learned that the select few who achieved their goals used the same best practices and influence strategies— strategies from which the authors distilled a new science of personal change.

Grenny has advised thousands of leaders on every major continent.  He has coauthored three immediate New York Times bestselling books including Crucial Conversations, Crucial Confrontations, and Influencer and is a regular columnist on BusinessWeek.com. He has also appeared on the Today show, Fox & Friends, CNN, ABC News, and CNBC, as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, and Los Angeles Times.

Alumni with Internet access can follow the webcast on UStream.tv and submit questions using Twitter and Facebook.  This webinar provides BYU alumni with another lifelong learning and enrichment opportunity.

COLLEGE OF HOME ECONOMICS

It is apple season, so how about visiting a local farm, picking some apples, and trying a new recipe for one of your goals in the College of Home Economics!  Here is one that Madeline Scott brought to our Back to School Night!

Philadelphia Style Apple Cake

6          cups peeled and thinly sliced Granny Smith apples
1 1/2    cups, plus 5 Tablespoons,  granulated sugar, divided
4          teaspoons cinnamon
3          cups all purpose flour
1          Tablespoon baking powder
1/2       teaspoon salt
4          eggs
1/2       cup light brown sugar
1          cup vegetable oil
1/2       cup orange juice
2 1/2    teaspoons vanilla extract

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease, sugar and flour a 10 inch bundt or tube pan.
2.  Combine apple slices with 5 T. sugar and cinnamon, set aside.
3.  Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl and set aside.
4.  Beat eggs with remaining sugar and brown sugar.  Add vegetable oil, orange juice and vanilla; beat well.  Gradually blend in flour mixture and mix until well blended (about 1 minute).
5.  Pour one third of the batter into the pan.  Top with half the apple slices, draining off any liquid.  Pour in half the remaining batter and top with remaining apple slices.  Top with remaining batter, making sure the apples are covered.
6.  Bake 55 to 60 minutes, until the top turns golden brown and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.  Let cool 10 minutes in pan.  Turn out onto a wire rack and let cool completely.   Serves 16.
